Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President
Insights into the operation of CSPOA Board of Directors
The CSPOA directors meet at 9:30 on the second Wednesday of every month to share information with members and directors. Each director serves as a liaison for the board. The specific roles of each director are outlined herein.
Al Franklin serves in an advisory capacity making suggestions and recommendations to the board on current issues using a committee when appropriate. Al is the Board’s contact with our attorney concerning the lawsuit the Town of Carolina Shores filed against CSPOA in the fall of 2018.
John Csernecky, Vice President, liaison for the Architectural Control Committee (ACC). The ACC has two functions: (1) to insure compliance with the “Declaration of Restrictions” and board approved “Rules and Regulations.” (2) Joe Martere is the employee that responds to member requests. For example, they are, but not limited to, tree removal, new fencing and exterior home improvements. A group of volunteers help to accomplish these functions.
Sue Hensler, Secretary, is the liaison for our social functions. These include, but are not limited to, Friday Evenings in the Park, the Volunteer Luncheon, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas gatherings. She is assisted by over forty (40) volunteers that support the various special interest groups.
Chuck Karnolt is liaison for the pool and tennis courts. The pool operation includes opening, closing, maintenance, and staffing. The pool and tennis courts require year-round maintenance. Chuck is assisted by Tom McClure, an onsite employee. An independent company routinely services the pool.
Kelly Wilson is liaison for the clubhouse and is the Communications director. He keeps all equipment utilized by our employees functioning as intended. This equipment includes computer systems, phones, printers, cameras, and the website. He is assisted by an Information Technology contractor. The clubhouse is also within his realm of responsibility including maintenance, furnishings and storage. In addition, Kelly oversees the office remodeling currently in progress.
David Franklin is the liaison for our common areas, which includes the gates, clubhouse, recreational area, and entrance parcels. A contract with Total Lawn Care and Landscaping was awarded last November for the mowing, trimming and planting of these areas. In addition, David maintains the flags and monitors the common areas lighting and irrigation system using contractors for maintenance and/or repairs as deemed necessary.
Joe Watts, President, creates the agenda and presides over the board meetings by encouraging discussion on agenda items, keeping the meeting on schedule and members on task. Joe insures all board directives are implemented and followed. He monitors association activities to ensure follow up to completion and promotes the association both inside and outside of the neighborhood.
Kerry Jarrell, although not a board member, is our Treasurer. Kerry’s responsibilities include overseeing all bookkeeping operations including collection of member dues, payment of all financial obligations and financial reporting to the Board. The Treasurer is also responsible for preparing the annual budget with the assistance of the Audit and Finance Committee.
In addition to the above duties, our directors often have special projects to analyze and evaluate for the benefit of the members and the board. Directors donate many hours per week to accomplish these duties. If a member has a question or concern, contact the office and the appropriate person can respond.

Office Renovation News – Kelly Wilson
The CSPOA office renovation has an officially started as of April 22. A temporary office has been set up inside the present Board of Directors room off the kitchen. This will house both the POA office and the ACC office during the renovation. The main clubhouse front door will serve as the main entrance for both clubhouse and office into the building. We will update everyone as progress continues. We would like to
thank everyone for their cooperation during this time.
Under the Pavilion – Kelly Wilson
The Carolina Shores POA is happy to let all our members know that the new pavilion, located in the recreation area between the pool and tennis courts, has finally been completed. We are proud of this accomplishment and welcome all members to enjoy the use of the new facility. Having a covered outdoor venue is a great step forward for us here in Carolina Shores to enjoy. This is going to be the ideal place to hold parties, celebrations, reunions, and many other events that members can hold for enjoyment and pleasure.
Rules and Regulations are in the process of being written up for the use of this facility. It has been decided to keep the current agreement for the pavilion area with just a few changes for usage of the facility. Until the time comes when everything is completed and updated, we ask that all members use and enjoy this new amenity to its fullest.
The first event to happen “Under the Pavilion” is already planned and the CSPOA Recreation Committee will be hosting this summer’s first “Happy Hour in the Park” on April 26 at 5:00 p.m. This event is open to all members; it is BYOB and they invite you to bring a snack or finger foods for the sharing table. Please join us as we kick off not only a new season of fun, but the opening of the new pavilion.
The next event under the pavilion will be the CSPOA Swimming Pool opening, set for May12, with hot dogs being grilled at the pavilion. Again, we invite everyone over to enjoy themselves as we celebrate the opening of the pool for another season. The big event will be the Memorial Day Picnic under the new pavilion, set for May 26 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. It is being catered by Smithfield’s, there will be live entertainment and it’s just a short walk to the pool. Tickets will be available from the POA office from May 1 -May 20. Please stop by and enjoy eating lunch outside or plan a full picnic. We hope everyone has a chance to do so.
* The CSPOA pavilion has multiple electrical outlets to use for coolers, slow cookers, roasters, crock pots, and any other small appliances. Fans are inside to help circulate air underneath to keep it fresh and water is available upon request. Gas grills will also be available for use to grill with users supplying their own propane tanks. Picnic tables will be kept underneath (please if you must move them, return them to their proper position when finished). Also, please dispose of all garbage appropriately. The pavilion has a wide variety of uses from picnics to reunions, graduation, birthday, anniversary parties, other celebrations, gatherings, and much more. Please enjoy and welcome to “Under the Pavilion.”
CSPOA Board of Directors
ACC Corner – Joe Martere, ACC Chairperson
This month the ACC wants to remind all members of the process of tree removal and additions/alterations to your homes.
· ANY work done on the exterior of your home MUST have approval and the issue of a permit by the Association. This includes painting your home the same color.
· Any tree over six (6) inches in diameter MUST have approval before cutting down. Trimming of a tree is permitted and no permit is required. Under no circumstances should any tree be topped. If it poses a problem because of its height, you may have a certified arborist trim and shape it for you. The ACC has a list of certified arborists available at the ACC office. Please call BEFORE doing this work and we will answer any questions you may have.
· Please consult your Rules and Regulations document to be sure you have the latest updates in your booklet, which were approved March 6, 2019. If you are unsure, please bring it to the office and we will check for you.
As always, please contact the ACC if you are unsure if approval is required. Please remember that other than me, all members of the ACC and CSPOA Board are volunteers. Please treat them as you would like to be treated.
Remember as always, if you are in doubt, it is better to call the office for clarification.

This group meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the POA clubhouse at 5:00 p.m. and is open to any single resident. If you are interested in finding out more, please feel free to join us. You can call me at 575-2339 if you would like a ride.

Hope you all have a wonderful summer. Enjoy all that nature gives us!
Knit ‘n Natter – Diana Mardall
Did you know Carolina Shores has an evening knitting/crocheting/needlework group? We meet every other Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the POA Library. If you knit, crochet or do other needlework, stop by and join us. We’d love to see new faces.
The group meets and shares patterns and expertise. We work on a variety of projects including sweaters, cardigans, afghans, shawls, cross stitch, arm knitting (that was a blast!), etc. Usually we even have dessert!
Our meetings in May will be on the 13th and 27th at 6.30 p.m.
If you have any questions, email me at limeylady70@gmail.com or call me at 910-575-7804.
QUILTING NEWS – Gloria Gustavson
Our group would like to report our latest accomplishment and project our upcoming ideas for the next season, which starts back up in September. As our charity project this year, we donated this quilt to the Boys and Girls Home in Lake Waccamaw for them to raffle off as a fundraiser.
We are extending an invitation to all sewers/quilters in our community to join us this Fall at the POA clubhouse if ‘quilting’ is on your list of things to learn. We are a ‘friendly’ group and welcome all levels of sewers/quilters We are willing to help you get started.
September’s agenda will be “What to Do with a Decorative Panel”. Future projects will be learning the “Stack and Whack” method of quilting. We will also be formulating Christmas ideas for ourselves and/or gifts.
We meet on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month (September – June), at 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Our first meeting in the Fall will be September 13. If you have any questions, call either Inez at 579-0779 or Gloria at 575-2238.
Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs
The Carolina Shores Book Discussion Group met on Friday, April 19, in the POA library. Our reading selection this month was The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See. Although we had a small group in attendance, we enjoyed discussing this book, which has been described as “A moving story about tradition, tea farming and the enduring connection between mothers and daughters.”
Our next meeting will be held on Friday, May 17, at 10:00 a.m. We will be discussing two books, The Tuscan Child by Rhys Bowen and The Storyteller’s Secret by Sejal Badani. If you live in Carolina Shores and love to read, you are invited to join us!
Low Impact Chair Aerobics – Mary Timothy
LOW IMPACT CHAIR AEROBICS is at 9:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. This exercise class is excellent for those that have difficulty with a regular aerobics class. This class will include weight lifting and core strengthening while sitting. Leg lifts will be done while holding on to a chair and then will be followed up with low impact movement without a chair. Weights will be needed. I suggest starting with one-pound weights. Without investing in weights, bottles of water, cans and such can be used if they fit comfortably in your hands. Ankle weights are optional. Come to get in shape and have fun. Contact Mary Timothy for more information at mtmothy@atmc.net.
Care Team – Beverly Rowse
The Care Team now has twenty-three (23) people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me. If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. When a call for help comes to me, I reach out to the members on NextDoor. I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get! It really doesn't take much to volunteer. An occasional ride, help with a small chore at home, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.
So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone. You don't have to be on NextDoor to request help. You can call me at 919-271-3005
